Yehudi Menuhin (more information at: http://www.menuhin.org/ and at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yehudi_Menuhin) played on a quantity of great violins. The two instruments which he owned for the longest time were, however, the 1742 "Lord Wilton" Guarneri del Gesu' (below) and the the 1714 "Soil" Stradivari (see posts with Itzhak Perlman).

I never get tired of haring this. And now so many versions! Whoo hoo! thanks, B
being new to classical music, what do i know? but to my ears this performance by menuhin is nothing short of brilliant. am i right? speaking of the beethoven, as that's what i've heard so far.
i would be interested in knowing if anyone feels that this is tops, second, third, or fourth compared to other performances, and which they are.
Good to get this again. I used to have this album autographed by Menuhin no less when he visited my country lago....Great music-making and such a wonderful, warm person.
archer: thanks for your comment. If my opinion can be of some help, I would say that this is my second favourite version of the Beethoven Concerto and, probably, the favourite version of the Mendelssohn.
My personal ranking, at the moment, would probably e as follows:
Beethoven concerto: 1) Schneiderhan/Jochum 2) Menuhin/Furtwaengler 3) Perlman/Giulini 4) Heifetz/Munch and Gruenberg/Kondraschin
Mendelssohn concerto: 1) Menuhin/Furtwaengler 2)Campoli/Boult (currently unavailable on CD) and a multitude of other performances, of which I' d be in trouble to say who comes 3rd, 4th etc.
I hope my comments helped
chamaeleoyes, thank you. i hadn't heard of schneiderhan. just found him on youtube. brilliant. thanks again for your response and the recommendations.

@archer: you' re welcome. It' s just my personal taste, however, so you might hold a very different opinion.
